The New Zealand Brewer's Association commissioned an economist to assemble a range of statistics describing the current state of the industry.

The New Zealand brewing industry, valued at $3.3 billion in 2022, faces challenges and changes. The industry grapples with supply chain issues, including barley shortages due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict and domestic CO2 shortages. Consumer preferences are shifting towards low and no-alcohol beers, with a 750% increase in consumption since 2019, as well as high-alcohol and low-carb options. Lager remains dominant, but hazy beers are gaining popularity. The number of breweries has stabilized at around 200, with beer manufacturing jobs increasing. Despite pandemic-related declines, beer consumption returned to pre-COVID levels in 2022, with a trend towards higher-value premium and craft beers.

BusinessNZ worked with an economist to create a bespoke forecast of New Zealand's workforce.

The New Zealand labour market faces a projected shortfall of 250,000 workers by 2048. This shortage will not be evenly distributed across sectors, with oversupply in some areas and undersupply in others, particularly in education, engineering, health, and society and culture. The report suggests three main strategies to address this deficit: increased net migration, improved participation of underutilized groups (such as Māori, Pasifika, women, and older workers), and investment in labour-saving technology. The report also notes that New Zealand's labour shortages are particularly intense compared to other OECD countries, and global competition for talent will increase as other developed nations face similar demographic challenges.

The report estimates that if widely adopted, Taxi could lead to significant increases in GDP, ranging from $812 million to $10.8 billion annually, depending on the level of uptake. Overall, the report positions Taxi as a tool that could help democratize access to capital for business growth in New Zealand, potentially addressing the country's persistent issues with low capital intensity and productivity.
